News & Information – from the Chairman

Meetings are continuing with C&RT on two levels. One level concerns the overall progress of restoration, whilst the other is concerned with health & safety issues.

C&RT has sold the Bury Bridge Trading Estate (which sits on the Bury terminus of the canal) for £2.2M. It is unlikely that any of the money will be used to restore the canal.

I am sad to report that Steve Dent has resigned from Council due to pressure of work and he has little free time. The Society is extremely grateful to him for eight years as our Working Party Organiser; the crowning glory of that period was of course the Meccano Bridge. Ian has already taken on the WP Organiser’s job, and Steve will still be available to offer advice as and when needed.

Liz Donlan has been co-opted onto Council, continuing her roles as minutes secretary, webmaster and also working on press releases. Liz was an early member of the Society, and was Company Secretary and Editor of this magazine for many years; welcome back Liz !

The Craft and Food Fair in aid of the Society is being held again at St Monica’s in Prestwich on Saturday 4th November, from 10am to 4pm. If you can give a prize for the tombola stall please bring it to the Open Meeting on 3rd October, or on the day by 10am. If you can help in any way at all (maybe helping to set up and clear the hall, or helping out on our sales stand) please give me a ring.
